At The Borders Party Annual General Meeting on 29 March, members heard how the need for a party without national political connections is clear, and that support for The Borders Party is steadily growing. As well as improving its effectivenes in council work the party is now much better prepared for campaigning in the wider Borders. Finding the right candidates for the local elections in 2012 is of the highest importance. While development of a range of policies continues, the original Borders Party message, about recognising the Borders’ unique qualities and using them to best develop our own economy, remains central. We are concerned that very major changes to the whole education system are being rushed through by the current administration in order to meet budget deadlines, and avoid a further politically damaging cut of 2% to the education budget. Analysis of replies to the Scottish Government’s consultation on the proposed Edinburgh City Region shows that there were more responses from the Scottish Borders than from all the rest of Scotland put together, and 95% of those who responded from the Borders, including several Community Councils, are opposed to joining the Edinburgh City Region. The first Annual General Meeting of The Borders Party took place on Monday 3 March 2008 at 7.30pm in the Community Hall, Newtown St Boswells. This was followed by a General Council meeting.
